The Morning Mood Reset: Simple Ways to Feel Happier in the Morning

Set yourself up for success.

To make the most of your day and start your day off on the right foot, it all starts the night before! About an hour before bed, take 5-10 minutes of quiet, close your eyes and breathe. Consider any major tasks the next day and decide is there anything you could do tonight that could set you in motion and make “getting started” any easier. Set 3 intentions or “points of focus” for the next day. Get to bed at a decent time and mentally prepare yourself for waking up early. Decide what you want to do with your “alone” time when you wake up (before the rest of the house).

Wake up!

Here are some simple but powerful ways you can take to start your day off right.

5am club.

Set your alarm and put it across the room so you can’t hit “snooze”. Wake up early. This gives you time to yourself before the demands of “others” to slowly wake up and prepare yourself for the day. It’s a time for reflection, preparation, intention-setting and self-care. This also gives you time so you can be slow and present and you aren’t rushing around feeling stressed, frustrated and overwhelmed.

Water before Coffee.

Our first thought is coffee. That’s what gets me out of bed! But encourage yourself to have 1 glass of water before getting that kick of caffeine. This helps to improve energy and clarity.

Relax and Reflect.

Reflect on your upcoming day. If you can get outside to do this, even better! Sit for a moment and be still.

  1. Put on music.

  2. Stretch.

  3. Think about any tasks and intentions you set the night before.

  4. Read (and I don’t mean Instagram or TikTok).

  5. Meditate for 5-10 minutes.

  6. Journal.

  7. Practice Gratitude- list 3 things you are grateful for.

  8. Listen to a podcast.

Prepare.

Take a moment to do any tasks you were wanting to before the rest of the house wakes up. Maybe you want to send an email, or prepare something for work. Maybe you want to pack the kids’ lunches before the rush and hustle and bustle begin. Maybe you want to get in a workout.

Exercise.

If you have the availability in your schedule, exercise is an amazing way to start your day. Go for a walk, run, yoga, pilates, weights.

Breakfast.

Eat a healthy balanced breakfast. Include protein and veggies.

Make your bed.

Limit phone use.
